01:04 pm - Windows 7 I read in the paper (yes actual dead tree edition) last night that Windows 7 was due to be released. Though it seems Microsoft has underestimated the interest in ripping to shreds reviewing the newest operating system for Windoze.
[Disclaimer. I use a PC. I've never been much of a one for religious cults so I haven't joined the born-again Mac users]
The thing I'm trying to puzzle out is the name.
I remember 3.1
After that came Windows 95. Then 98, 2000, ME (the bastard child no-one talks about), XP and now Vista.
So which of these were 4,5 and 6?
Although it's probably closer to random-marketing-wank in picking the number I'm curious Current Mood: curious

04:29 pm - HD update Well good news and bad news on the external Hard drive. The good news is that it is now being recognised by the computer and I've been able to run chkdsk and defrag on it. The bad news is that of the folders on it that I can now access, the "Music" one isn't among them.
I'm wondering if copying the contents of the drive may make the files readable on another device.
I think I should probably try and get a proper "internal" drive and put the music files on that rather than have them on a USB external. In theory I assume the internal would be a little more reliable.

02:09 am - Music died The external hard drive that I shifted all of my music files onto and have been slowly sorting decided to come back tonight as "The File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable".
Of course being connected by a USB cable rather than actually installed as a second drive means I can't run fun stuff like chkdsk on it to try and fix it. Hopefully I can recover it.
Currently in a desperate hunt to try and find the receipt to see if the warranty is still in date. Unusually for me I don't seem to have filed it in the IT receipts folder.

09:04 pm - Updateryness Internet! Finally! Nothing like arsing about with Helstra and then waiting for an ISP transfer. But I'm back anyway.
All the stuff is moved into the new house and most of it is at least in the room it will be unpacked in. I've also decided there will be a cull. Some stuff like the record player has already gone, as have a few other bits and pieces. The records themselves are now part of a pile that will be disposed of in one way or another. Got an old leather jacket that would suit motorcycle usage that's been added to the pile. Even the costume wardrobe will be getting a slimming down.
I like the feel of the new place. Once things are on shelves I think it will be rather good. There's a lingering odour of mouse that still haunts the kitchen (I won't repeat the words my mother used when we cleaned under the stove) but the last mouse appears to have been the one snapped earlier this week and I have seen any more little twitchy faces. There's a few things that need addressing by the Agent, like a missing drip tray in the grill, but for the most part the house is OK. As cold_echo pointed out, I've lived in worse places (though Ringwood East is still the worst I think) :-)
Hard rubbish this coming week should help me get rid of some of the shit left in the back yard, and the Landlord has been very approachable so far. If my proposed veggie patch (go on, laugh) bestows a bounteous harvest he's even offered to swap veggies for chickens. He's also been amenable to putting down a concrete slab under the back shed. So it might actually be able to be used for storage of something like gardening stuff!
There's a significant amount of lawn to mow, with being a corner house and a rather wide nature strip but I think it will be manageable. Wait till summer and ask me again.
Sadly it also proved to be an expensive week. Ember had to have his rear diff replaced. Not cheap. But it's nice to drive with no whirring noise any more :-) Current Mood: thoughtful

01:12 am - Internet Trolls are at it again. Most people will agree that the US Patent office is a pile of steaming excrement run by incompetents with less IQ than your average squirrel. Or at least that's the impression their Intellectual Property people give when they approve things like this. It seems they've been training the Patent Office people in Australia as well.
Vuestar technologies, a Singapore company, managed to get a lovely little piece of Patenting approved entitled "Method of locating web-pages by utilising visual images". Their website lists both US and Australian patent information.
So what is it? Glad you asked. This little bit of bull says that Vuestar owns the patent on you linking to another website using an image. So if you blog, or have a website, or maybe even a flickr page, then you're infringing on their intellectual property rights. They would be happy to sell you a licence to allow you to continue, however.
The best bit is from the website FAQ: Is there any Prior Art? RN Technologies, Ron Langford the inventor filed the Original Patent in 2000 not in any way relying on or offending any third parties’ prior art. All Patent examiners investigations cleared, R Langford and the VUESTAR Technologies for clean patent registration.
Yeah, because no-one before 2000 ever thought of linking to another webpage by putting a logo up as a focus for the link.
More info here and here.

07:01 pm - Ebay does WHAT?!?!? Just stumbled across this article about Ebay removing payment options for transactions as from 17th of June.
All items appearing on eBay.com.au as of 17 June 2008 must be paid for using one of the following:
1. PayPal 2. Pay on pick up (i.e. paid for when picking up the item) 3. Visa/MasterCard (with transactions processed by PayPal).
So no direct deposit, no cheques, no money orders and no non-Paypal credit transactions.
The ACCC have begun investigations into whether this can be considered Trade Monopoly and have asked people for submissions. Ebay have effectively agreed that it is but have asked for an exemption under the auspices of them doing it for the safety of Australian Ebay users.
Unsurprisingly, many Ebay users seem to think they are able to make up their own minds about what is best for them. And while I generally think online petitions aren't worth the paper they're written on I'm going to sign this one.
Normally I don't spend much time on the Ebay forums, but they're awash with discussion too.
Personally I use Paypal, but for local buyers I use Direct Deposit where available. I've been buying things online for over 10 years now. And I was buying things from overseas before I had a computer. They only time I've ever had a problem with losing money: Paypal.
I'm hoping that the ACCC will be treating Ebay like the Microsoft of online Auctions. Then perhaps the choice of payment options will be retained. Ebay is already getting money from listing fess and a percentage of the sale price. They don't need more from handling the transaction as well.
Edit: Apparently there was a story on this on A Current Affair tonight as well. The talking head from Ebay likened the introduction of Paypal to the introduction of the use of seat-belts in Australia (!) and someone has already come with this: Current Mood: annoyed

03:44 am - Lap top needs As part of my new found OMG I'm Going To Uni I have realise that I'm going to need to get myself a laptop.
Being the poverty stricken retch what I am I wondered if people might have suggestions for a laptop.
Now I don't need one that has enough grunt to run Hand of Chaos with no lag or anything but I'd also like to get something that's been produced since Windows 98 was considered the thing to use.
I don't have a price range as such but obviously the cheaper the better. Knowing that you can get brand spanking new ones for $1500 am I kidding myself if I'm looking at $400 or under? Do any of you have an old laptop sitting there, unloved that you would like to move on to a new home? Or know of anyone else?
Or should I just bite the bullet and buy something new and shiny and due to be obsolete by the time it's out of the box? Current Mood: angsty

09:06 pm - Educational day Today I headed into the city to take some architectural photos. Well more reference photos. I'm hoping to use this building on the corner of Collins and Russell Streets as a template for a building in Secondlife.

Me? Nerd? And your point?
In an attempt to try and find out a little about the history of the building itself I headed into the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Unfortunately the image archivist was busy trying to put together the newsletter and was flat out but suggested I email in my request and he'll see what contemporary photos they may have. While I was there I thoughts I'd have a little hunt through the reference material myself and see what I could find.
Things wot I learnded:
The building used to be addressed as 116 Collins Street East but is now 139 Collins St.
The CBD street numbering was revised in 1888.
Melbourne's postcode system prior to World War II was similar to the UK one with things like S.12 or E.16 as postcodes.
Exhibition Street used to be called Stephen Street prior to the opening of the Exhibition Buildings in 1880. Not a real surprise but I didn't know what it was called beforehand.
The owner of the building, Dr. James G. Beaney MLC. FRCS, was known to advocate cod-liver oil for pulmonary tuberculosis and alcohol, especially champagne, for most disorders, both of which were then conventional therapeutic agents. This, coupled with his penchant for wearing diamond studs, ruby rings and a gold watch earned him the nickname "Champagne Jimmy". He was also tried for the murder of Mary Lewis in 1866 after he performed an "illegal operation". He was acquitted of the murder but subsequently retried and again acquitted. 08:10 pm - Moved in All of the crap has been moved from the old house and is now in the new place. I'm not sure where some of it IS but it's all there. Only found the VCR today but I still don't know where any of the remotes are.
The computer is up and running and waiting for the ADSL connection to get the okay. Currently I'm round at my brother's using his speed limited connection (because he's already used his download limit for the month).
Special thanks to mortonhall, Trevor, dcrisp, the other David, Mum, Chris and my brother for their help in moving all the stuff.
Durfin is adjusting to the new place. She seems to have settled in quite well. She got out yesterday by pushing the flyscreen off the window I had inadvertently left open. Thankfully she came back after being called and has taken up residence on top of one of the cabinets that has a blanket sitting on it.
I'm slowly working out where to put things. I seem to have less wall space than the previous place (which is odd given that it's bigger). Though all the rooms have built in wardrobes which may meen hiding some of the junk easier.
Anyhoo, hope the Grinch brings you what you want for Giftmas. See you once I'm back online. Current Mood: busy

11:03 pm - Update with moving and such. As a follow up to my post about the job finishing up it seems I spoke too soon. Tuesday morning the Boss comes past and says there is work to be done after all and would I be able to keep coming in. He also said I do good work. Okaaaaayy. Obviously the "we've caught up" thing wasn't true (which I had sort of guessed) but I'm not really sure what's going on here. If I've rubbed somebody the wrong way with my rather social interaction with people, then by all means take me aside and spell it out. I know the place frowns on talking while your supposed to be working but it not like I'm talking all the time or even a great deal about non-work related stuff anyway. But when you put your three casuals together, me, an American backpacker, and a Russian schoolgirl together working on a rather mind numbing paste 'n' paper job, I am occasionally going to talk to them about random stuff.
So yes working. And the lack of sleep is really starting to wear. Late nights packing and early starts are not my friends at the moment. I suppose I can at least sleep in over Christmas.
Internet is in the process but can't be connected until after I move. So I may be offline for a week or maybe not. I'm hoping the new connection is completed by Christmas but Internode are not giving any guarantees. The Optus Customer Service chap was very sympathetic at the reasons I gave him for leaving. Yes the phone network that the new place is connected to might be owned by Telstra but I'm not prepared to pay a minimum of $35 a month for a home telephone I rarely use. And of course once the home phone goes then the Optus ADSL package loses it's offpeak download and goes up $10 a month over the Internode deal. Once the exchange is capable of ADSL2 they could offer me the $19 phone line and the whole package again. Of course when the exchange is going to be upgraded is anyone's guess so thanks anyway guys. Though on the plus side they did put me on the "transfer hold" which means my optus email will remain active for 90 days even though I'm no longer an active account holder. It's normally a thing so you can access webmail while a transfer is taking place but he added me in as a bonus thing which was nice.
Packing is not meeting expectations. Thankfully I have a full day Saturday to pack rather than just an evening. Current Mood: tired

08:38 pm - Second Life A while ago I read an article about about a guy who designs avatars for people in Second Life. He apparently does it well enough, and often enough, that he is able to make a living out of it. This was my first contact with SL. I didn't think much of it at the time. I had a cursory look, saw lots of furries and winged fairy things and figured it was similar to The Sims only with other people controlling the actions of the other sims rather than a computer. Didn't really think much more of it.

06:14 pm - Me and electronics today It's funny. My Dad said that when he was talking to his friend about finding a car for me he said he "didn't want something that was going to break down on the way home."
Ah the irony.
Picked the car up and Dandenong, make it along the freeway to about Burke Road and then the automatic transmission starts acting up. It seems like the electronic clutch or something has decided not to play ball anymore. When it goes from one gear to another it will just go out of gear but not into the next. So I finally park it near Auburn station and head home. The dealer is picking it up tomorrow morning to fix.
So I almost had a new car today.
On top of that my computer was acting up last night - ZoneAlarm is chewing up the CPU memory at an extraordinary rate. I finally un-installed all the registry files and made for a clean install this morning. That all goes well. I click restart and suddenly I have no HD registering on my pooter any more!
Fumbled through the bios to no avail. Spoke with a few friends but again no luck. Turned it off and went and had breakfast. Came back and HD magically reappears. :-/

08:53 pm - Tech support help. I thought I'd throw the floor open to some of my more tech savvy friends for suggestions on solutions to my problems.
The new computer is running a legit copy of Windows XP Pro (yes I paid money for it).
The problem is I'm having minor corruptions in files when I try and download things. Currently my AVG software is try to download an update for the new version of the programme. When using the inbuilt downloader it comes back saying the update is corrupt please try again. So I've manually gone to the site and tried to install the new version with the same result.
But the problem continues. Now that I have a larger hard-drive I tried to hunt up some old fan movies that I liked such as Troops and George Lucas In Love. Again when they had finished downloading I got error messages when I tried to play them saying the file was corrupt. I'm even getting the occasional photo showing up with funny pixellations as if there's a corruptions somewhere in the photo but it doesn't show up on other people's computers. And on Sunday while updating some bits WINRAR files downloaded on my PC came back corrupted while the same files downloaded on Dave's PC using the same connection worked fine.
So obviously there's a problem with downloading files. The cable modem is the same one I was using on the old machine so there's no issue with the modem (and I've checked about updating the drivers).
Any suggestions? Current Mood: annoyed

10:06 pm - New Pooter!! This weekend has mostly been spent getting the new computer up and running. I picked up the pieces on Saturday morning and then my brother and I (with some "help" from my nephew) spent the rest of the afternoon putting the it together and getting the software up and running. One of the problems with getting a large hard-drive is it take so friggen' long to format!
We discovered along the way that, what I thought had been my old CRT monitor on the way out, was actually the old graphics card giving up the ghost. So I now have a spare CRT monitor :-)
I wasn't able to get any sound but it turns out we'd simply forgotten to install the audio drivers. This I had to get dcrisp's help to discover. Remedial? Moi?
But now I have sound, some new games, and a lot faster and quieter computer to play with.
One thing I did manage to forget to back up from the old PC was my address book so I'll have to go through the email files looking for addresses to update. :-/

04:17 pm - Long weekend update Thursday night dropped some boxes round to mordwen and helped with a little packing. Along various discussion we got onto movies and I mentioned that I hadn't seen The Lion in Winter. It was Anthony Hopkins' second film and Timothy Dalton's first. There plenty of excellent dialogue and a visually authentic feel (though the Christmas tree was rather anachronistic). Certainly one the deserves repeat viewing.
Friday was pretty much a washout with nothing open. I ended up breaking one of the heals on my shoes and got into a rather grumpy mood and decided to pass on going to Golgotha.
Saturday I went out and treated myself to some retail therapy. Bough myself a Fujifilm s5600 digital camera which I'm rather happy with. It's supposed to come with a redemption for a 512 memory card which the salesmanager said was redeemable online. Fuji said they did have one but it finished on the 9th. Called back the manager and he's looking into it. I'm being the polite, patient customer so far but it won't last forever.
Saturday night headed down out to the 'burbs to Mum's. Dinner and Mum's first attempt at chocolate mousse. A little thicker than it should have been but still good :-) Sunday was lunch at Mum's with my brother and his family coming around. I may be the "favourite Uncle" (not that there's much in the way of competition) as my niece asked me to sit next to her again. Perhaps it's because she doesn't run around like a screaming idiot so I have more patience with her than with her brothers. Though she is the eldest. My brother brought the quote for the desktop we're looking at building and we had a bit more of a chat about powersupplies and video cards and the like. Headed back to his place and supervised him cutting up the rest of a gum tree they'd had taken down and picked up my Star Wars DVDs. He mentioned that he wanted to see Serenity and I said I'd loan him my copy. He said once I have the new pooter I wouldn't need to "loan" it... :-)
Monday I was supposed to catch up with cold_echo but she's been downed by the evil lurgi and is having trouble getting enough breath to speak (a rare occurrence) and so spent the day checking various pooter bits on the net.

I'm trying to burn a copy of my mp3s of Nicol Williamson's recording of The Hobbit. I used to have them on my hard-drive but dumped it to disc. In the process of doing so part 5 has become slightly corrupted. I say "slightly" because I can still play the file using winamp but I can't copy the file back to my hard-drive (I get an "incorrect parameter" error).
So if anyone can suggest what might be going wrong or even if some-one has a copy of part 5 of the MP3s they could forward that would be great. Current Mood: confused

11:01 am - Gardens and Pooters After doing the gardening and finalising making back ups of the computer files I didn't end up feeling very sociable Saturday night and stayed home. My apologies to yllyan for not making it to her party.
Sunday the grass got mown again and the GWB is overflowing (thanks to cold_echo giving the plum tree and additional prune).
The Pooter ended up having to be reformatted which in itself proved more of a drama than I thought. The Win2000 disc I have turns out to be an "upgrade" rather than a new install disc. With someone forgetting to bring the Win98 disc my pooter briefly had Windows ME installed on it again before being dumped for 2000 again.
All seems to be working again though the code for the anti-virus seems to be taking its time coming through. Now begins the tedious task of reinstalling those programmes that I want to have back on the system.

11:32 pm - Pooter problems For some time now my PC has been crashing with the ever popular Blue Screen of Death TM. Though the message error was one of a memory problem and it was dumping kernel memory. I had attributed it to having far too much crap on my hard drive as it usually only occurred when I was running too many things at once.
However recently it has been occurring more frequently and last week occurred while nothing was running other than a defrag.
This seems to have reinforced the theory that there is a corrupt sector on the HD and sadly the only way to fix this is to reformat the drive and start from scratch.
I'm in the process of burning files to disc (which has caused the pooter to crash 3 times tonight) and I intend to attempt to kill the drive on Saturday.
I'm madly trying to find exe files of programmes that I have installed (and want to put back on). Some I have the discs for, others will be interesting.

The bullshit about copyright in the US has now arrived on the doorstep of University Presses. When you don't need thousands to fight it in court, all you need is a threatening letter.
And on a related note, the Inducing Infringement of Copyright Act (the Induce act) as an extension to the DCMA would involve the banning of technologies that provide an inducement for people to break copyright law. So if it goes through such things as iPods, DVD burners, CD burners, VCRs, WiFi stereos, AM/FM transmitters and probably even photocopiers could all be on the hitlist. 09:18 am - Mmmm digital chocolate One of the Techs here just received a parcel with some RAM he'd ordered from Amicroe Australia. Included in the box were 3 peppermint chocolates in little Amicroe packets.
