05:04 pm - Domestic distractions Did sweet FA as far as reading today (my mind is a little overwhelmed with Greece at the moment anyway - between Ancient Mediterranean Cultures and Modern Day European troubles). Instead I finally managed to get the majority of the back yard mowed. Also cleaned the inside of my car, something that's been on my Roundtuit list since late last year. Just need to wash the outside to match.
Also got a couple more boxes unpacked. At this rate I should be unpacked by Christmas :-)
But as penance for no reading today I think I will be staying back till library close tomorrow night. Yay for late night library opening. Current Mood: accomplished

09:04 pm - Updateryness Internet! Finally! Nothing like arsing about with Helstra and then waiting for an ISP transfer. But I'm back anyway.
All the stuff is moved into the new house and most of it is at least in the room it will be unpacked in. I've also decided there will be a cull. Some stuff like the record player has already gone, as have a few other bits and pieces. The records themselves are now part of a pile that will be disposed of in one way or another. Got an old leather jacket that would suit motorcycle usage that's been added to the pile. Even the costume wardrobe will be getting a slimming down.
I like the feel of the new place. Once things are on shelves I think it will be rather good. There's a lingering odour of mouse that still haunts the kitchen (I won't repeat the words my mother used when we cleaned under the stove) but the last mouse appears to have been the one snapped earlier this week and I have seen any more little twitchy faces. There's a few things that need addressing by the Agent, like a missing drip tray in the grill, but for the most part the house is OK. As cold_echo pointed out, I've lived in worse places (though Ringwood East is still the worst I think) :-)
Hard rubbish this coming week should help me get rid of some of the shit left in the back yard, and the Landlord has been very approachable so far. If my proposed veggie patch (go on, laugh) bestows a bounteous harvest he's even offered to swap veggies for chickens. He's also been amenable to putting down a concrete slab under the back shed. So it might actually be able to be used for storage of something like gardening stuff!
There's a significant amount of lawn to mow, with being a corner house and a rather wide nature strip but I think it will be manageable. Wait till summer and ask me again.
Sadly it also proved to be an expensive week. Ember had to have his rear diff replaced. Not cheap. But it's nice to drive with no whirring noise any more :-) Current Mood: thoughtful

05:18 pm - Cars and the mechanics thereof Now I'll be one of the first to admit that my knowledge of cars is somewhat on a par with my mother's knowledge about computers. I know how to drive one, I know where the on button is, and I know that they need a checkup every now and again.
Since Ember was in need of a service I asked my brother who he would recommend as a garage locally. He said he does his himself. Thus did I start on my way to performing my first car service. After assembling the assorted bits and pieces we changed the oil and filters, the air filter, flushed the radiator, changed the park plugs, and checked the brakes for wear.
Now for some of my more petrol headed friends this may sound like rather simple stuff but to me it was a big step. I knew where to put the oil *in*, I've just never taken it out before. And while it doesn't save much from getting someone like Lubemobile to come round and do it for me, it means I'm getting better acquainted with how my car works. Current Mood: accomplished

08:49 pm - Updateryness Slowly getting the address changes organised for the new place. Contacted my insurance today and the good news is that my Contents premium will drop about $15 a month from what it is now. Obviously no-one can be bothered to travel all the way out there to burgle a house.
The job is continuing. Working for a bookbinder is rather like a glorified Craft Class: put PVA glue on this piece of paper/card/board, stick it to another piece of paper/card/board in this specific way, repeat, repeat, and again. The first few days I came home aching from being on my feet nearly all day. After two weeks my legs can now cope but my back still twinges towards the end of the day.
Car is going along all good now that the gearbox has been replaced. I've done nearly 450 kms since I picked it up! Still need a name for it.
Packing going slowly. Procrastination is a way of life not just a passing fad.
Looking at buying a new phone. Sick of not having a cordless, especially when it's not in the same room as the computer and I need to make a support call. I've decided I'm going to get one with a built in answering machine rather than pay for voicemail each month.
And to celebrate my initial success on Ebay (and as a birthday present to myself) I've ordered one of these :-)
I also need to write a review for God On My Side. Current Mood: busy

01:05 pm - We have car! *Sings* On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again...
Well I've picked up the car again. It all seems to be working well now, though just to be sure I'm going to get it serviced. That way I should get any more nasty surprises.
The roofrack fits too which is good. I wasn't sure if it would fit this type of car as well.
And Volvomort was collected today as well. *sigh* Current Mood: chipper

06:14 pm - Me and electronics today It's funny. My Dad said that when he was talking to his friend about finding a car for me he said he "didn't want something that was going to break down on the way home."
Ah the irony.
Picked the car up and Dandenong, make it along the freeway to about Burke Road and then the automatic transmission starts acting up. It seems like the electronic clutch or something has decided not to play ball anymore. When it goes from one gear to another it will just go out of gear but not into the next. So I finally park it near Auburn station and head home. The dealer is picking it up tomorrow morning to fix.
So I almost had a new car today.
On top of that my computer was acting up last night - ZoneAlarm is chewing up the CPU memory at an extraordinary rate. I finally un-installed all the registry files and made for a clean install this morning. That all goes well. I click restart and suddenly I have no HD registering on my pooter any more!
Fumbled through the bios to no avail. Spoke with a few friends but again no luck. Turned it off and went and had breakfast. Came back and HD magically reappears. :-/
ZA is still being CPU hungry though. Current Mood: exhausted

02:26 pm - The ups and downs Yesterday was definitely a mixed bag.
The morning went well. I went down to audition for Temptation and am now on their list. No idea whether it will be a fortnight or six months or what ever before I get a call but we'll see how it goes.
Once home I spent about an hour on the phone talking to an American friend thanks to the wonders of Skype. It was wonderful to finally hear her voice.
Got the lawn mowed before heading off to the airport to pickup Mum and her partner from their Queensland trip.
Then headed down to dalekboy's for much gasbagging and farewells. On the way down Volvomort was making some very worrying noises and once I popped the bonnet it seemed the dipstick had popped and was leaking oil. On the way back I put some oil in and all sounded well until about Toorak and then there was very little power to get up hills and a knocking noise started in the engine. According to the RACV man who attended there's a possibility of a loose piston. It now become a decision of do I spend the money to get him fixed or is it time to have him laid to rest.
Not that I can really afford to buy a replacement car either, especially at the moment.
Sadly my catch up today with cold_echo has been put on hold. Current Mood: down

08:17 pm - Updates, some annoyances and news Friday night I headed down to Mum's to fix the headlights on the Volvomort. Chris had bought a replacement switch but the socket that it fitted into was out of stock. Thankfully my brother said this wouldn't be a problem and, after stirring me about actually completing something to do with car maintenance myself, stripped the old socket and re-clipped the wires to fit directly onto the switch. At times it can be handy to have an electrician in the family. We also fixed the angle of one of the headlights as it had fallen forward.
Saturday I helped Mum out with a few computer things and looked through the Christmas scrapbooking pages she's making. There's some old memories there! I also sat through One Magic Christmas which turned out to be ok though rather predictable.
Mum and I headed off to the local Safeway to try and find a sink strainer: the little metal thing you put in the kitchen sink that that stops most of the bits left over from washing your dishes going down the drain. You'd think they'd be common as muck right? Both the local Safeway here didn't have any nor did the Coles. The K-Marts in Northcote and Preston didn't have them nor did the two Coles Express stores in the city. Or Target. Ans it turns out that while both the Coles and the Safeway in Pakenham do normally stock them they're both out of stock. Has this item suddenly become the "must have" item for 2006? It's just bizarre!
And while I'm on the subject of hard to find items, Kiwi black shoe cream. I've been trying to find this for nearly 6 months. There's a tonne of navy cream around but I can't find any black. I finally gave up and bought some shoe cream from the Myer shoe department.
Got some more read on The Historian which is proving rather enjoyable.
Saturday night went round to raven_'s and was there when they received some wonderful news. Bouncy happy people :-) Current Mood: curious

10:20 pm - Things you need to do and things you wish you hadn't This evening I pulled apart the dash of the Volvomort to have a look at the headlight switch. The back had fallen off and at some point the connecting pins had become overheated and melted the plastic. My Mum's partner is picking up what we hope will be the correct replacement switch tomorrow and then I'm heading down to Mum's on Friday night for dinner and putting the switch in. This might almost be my first attempt at fixing a car fault on my own!
Today I received my DVD copy of The Hobbit. Big Tolkien nerd that I am I've never managed to see this when it turned up at the Valhalla or the Westgarth. SO I thought I'd actually buy myself a copy for completionist sake.
I knew the artwork was dodgy but I'm five minutes into the film and I already want to claw my eyes out. Aaaargh! I will force myself to watch it though just so I can say I have seen it. I can't believe people have fond memories of this film Current Mood: shocked

10:13 pm - Happy New Year to all After sweltering in the infernal heat of Saturday I finally headed off to a friend's NYE party only to discover the headlights on the Volvomort don't work. I think is the main switch but I don't really have the spare cash to take it off to the auto-elecs if it's a major wiring fault. I'll attempt to replace the switch myself and see if that fixes it.
Thankfully I was ablt to take advantage of the free public transport for Saturday night and after some drinking (which hit me a lot harder than expected) I toddled off home around 2:30 AM.
Watched the Edinburgh Tattoo last night as has become a bit of a tradition. They seem to be editing the broadcast shorter each year. Very disappointed with the 2005 showing.
Other than that I've spent the last couple of days doing housework in between watching/listening to the commentaries on the new Titanic DVD that I bought Friday. I've been interested in the history of the ship long before the movie came out and I can remember being blown away at the accuracy of the sets and the costumes and all. It's still a movie I enjoy and having the historical commentary was an interesting insight.
Time to get ready for bed. Work tomorrow :-( Current Mood: blah

10:27 pm - A quiet weekend I been feeling rather unsocial this weekend.
Friday night was supposed to be finishing drinks for my now-ex-manager at the Long Room. Everyone else buggered off at 5 but I had to stay till 6 to close up. By the time I got down there the queue was out onto the footpath and there was guys with lists at the front. I tried a few mobiles to contact the other colleagues but no luck. Decided I wasn't going to wait in the queue and headed home. From there in a bit of a grump I forgot seedy_girl & thorfinn's birthday bash until it was very late.
Saturday went down to get the Volvomort checked out and was happy to discover that it was only the battery that needed replacing not the alternator.
Saturday night I was feeling quite settled on the couch watching The Aviator (which I was very impressed with) and decided not to push the cold thing again and stayed home.
Today I ventured out for pike drill with the Rawdon's regiment. Had another newbie turned up and I was Sergeant again. I quite enjoying this. Lon brought along the red wool so we should have a few of the red coats made soon. We also had a woman from the National Trust notice us. She seemed quite interested in what we were doing and wondered if there might be a way of combining some of the civilian aspects of the group to some of the National Trust exhibitions. Who knows what might happen from there.
Back to early shifts this week so I had best try for an early(ish) night. Current Mood: pleased

04:29 pm - Bookage Well I finally finished Green Mars last night and I'm itching to get into the final book. It seems to have taken forever as I've been distracted by other things and too tired to do any significant reading when I get to bed.
I've got a few books there to read (including finishing the Strange Laws of Old England) but nothing is screaming READ ME! at the moment.
And I must return to erudito his copy of 1421. I still have to read through The Brothers' War (?) but haven't been enthusiastic about starting.
Off to Pakenham tonight to pick up a replacement battery for the Volvomort, possibly scoring dinner at Mum's in the process. Current Mood: blah

06:20 pm - *Bang* Well the Volvomort was involved in a little altercation this afternoon. Waiting in traffic for the lights to change. The green arrow turns green and the lane to my right starts to move. Drop-kick in the Mercedes behind me is not paying attention as to which lane is moving and pops the accelerator.
Thankfully the Volvomort has a nice big towbar at the back and made a lovely impression in the front of this bloke's Mum's Mercedes. Even the concertina into the car in front of me barely made an impression (there's screw shaped smudge on his rear bumper).
The Volvomort has had his towbar bent up and the rear bumper pushed in a bit but thankfully is still very much drivable.
Bloody Mercedes drivers! Current Mood: annoyed

04:00 pm - Arse! Brought Volvomort in to get the spare fixed today. Spoke with the guys who do the cars for work and they said because of the way the tyre has been cut (along the diameter) that it has stuffed the wall of the tyre and it's now unsafe. So a hopeful tyre repair has gone to the need for a whole replacement tyre.
Bugger!
And work is stressing the shit out of me at the moment.

07:44 pm - I'll hospitalise the fucker! Changed the tyre on Volvomort only to discover it wasn't a nail or something that I'd run over, some little shit has come along and stabbed a knife into the tyre wall. I can still see the outline of the knife on the rubber as they've pushed it all the way in.
Not only that but as I was driving back from the service station (the spare needed a little air) I found the guy 3 houses up from me also changing HIS tyre. Thinking this was too good for a coincidence I walked up to see whether his had been slashed just as I saw him put his car key into the side of the tyre. Guess that answers that question!
And of course since I'm flat broke till payday I'll just have to pray that I don't need a spare for any reason until I can get it fixed next week.
Fuckers!
Aaaargggh! Current Mood: pissed off

10:51 am - Bah Was running late this morning, raced to the door to have the kitty sitting there wanting to come in. So raced back put down crunchies and water and out again (though I think she'll be upset at being locked in all day) and out to Volvomort only to discover he has a flat tyre.
:-/
I figured by the time I changed the tyre I would be even later. So skipped that and walked to the station catching the later train.
Have managed to track down a shop in the CBD that sells more of the cotton I need to finish the sash. A place called the Wool Shop on Russell Street.
Off to Opera Macabre tonight, though I don't think I'll be sticking around for long afterwards. If I don't get the sash finished tonight I shall have to get up early tomorrow to get it finalised.
I think it's some sort of a tradition among costumers to have things finished as you're walking out the door :-) Current Mood: blah

08:27 am - Petrol problems Last night I went to put petrol in Volvomort. Now being and older car he's been using Lead Replacement Petrol since they phased out LRP a couple of years ago.
Anyway the first servo has little red tags on all the LRP pumps saying out of order. So I try the one a bit further up the road. Same story.
I go into the servo this time and ask if they know when new stocks would be in.
"Never."
?!?! So aparently the "phasing out" of LRP has now happened. No warning. No 'you'll need to check your vehicle specifications soon as we won't be supplying LRP in a few months'. Nothing.
And using the Safeway (Woolworths for my non-Victorian friends) discount dockets made the LRP barely affordable.

06:48 pm - Cars and jobs Well I ended up with TWO job interviews today rather than one!
Picked Volvomort up from the mechanic last night and he seemed to be running fine. Headed off to Polly for drinkies with a few people. At about 8:20 my phone rings. It's a woman from a recruiting agency I applied with on Tuesday wanting to ask me a few questions and could I come in for an interview tomorrow! I've never heard of a recruiting agency ringing back that late before.
Anyhoo. Drive home and watch latest episode of Angel with missmargaret, thebaronmk1 and pink_kan (which was nice to have a Lorn episode). Drive pink_kan home and in almost the same spot as Monday night Volvomort cacked it again. Managed to push him into the Macca's carpark this time. I didn't have my mobile with me so I had to walk home anyway.
Seeing as last time this happened on Tuesday the mechanic was able to start him no problems I thought I'll leave him there the night, go down in the morning and if he starts great, if not we go back to the start again. He didn't start. So he's back at the garage and I'm thinking it might be an electrical rather than mechanical problem. We'll see.
So I get a phone call this morning confirming my first interview at 1:00 PM and my second at 3:30 PM. First was at 52 Collins Street. Second at 80 Collins Street (which was really good considering I left the first interview at 3:20 PM!). Thankfully I was able to get a copy of the apptitude tests I performed completed for the first interview and the second was happy to take a copy of them.
We'll se what happens from here. Current Mood: blah

06:13 pm - More cars Picked up Volvomort from the mechanic's to aid me in going to Polly's tonight. The mechanic had said one of the starts yesterday was just letting it idle for about half an hour - no problems, and the other was driving around Preston, pulling up at traffic lights, turning the car off and restarting - again all with no problems.
The fuel pump is slightly more growly than before the car stopped Monday but fingers crossed may last a bit longer. He told me to replace both pumps would cost about $500 + labour so if it doesn't pack it in I may take mr_e_cat's advice and attempt to replace them myself.
Might have to bribe Glenn and perhaps dominicalis with beverages and ask for assitance. We'll see how things go. He's back in tomorrow for a pressure test.
In other news I have a job interview tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Current Mood: mellow
|
11:18 am - Damn cars Just got off the phone to the mechanic. He took the car out 3 times yesterday and once this morning and didn't have a problem. He said the fuel pump is noisy as hell but it was still working.
He's going to set up a pressure test on the fuel line but didn't want to just replacing fuel pumps if they still worked (especially when one of them costs $300).
Poor Volvomort.

8th of March, 2004
10:37 pm - Arse! While coming back from dropping the keys back to pink_kan the Volvomort started having a bit of a shudder. At first it felt like I had suddenly run out of petrol but then it started back and kept going. The fuel gauge said 3/4 of a tank so no dramas there. A little further and then the shudder starts again. The car would slow and the petrol would get into the engine and I'd speed up again, then it would srop and I'd slow again. I managed to get nearly to the top of St Georges Road before it finally gave up and stopped.
40 minutes later RACV arrived to confirm the fuel pump had died. 50 minutes afters that and the tow truck arrives to take my car up to the mechanic.
Looks like I'll be having to cough up for a new fuel pump.
Bugger. Current Mood: annoyed

09:47 am - A little *up* in the week Well my Rocco shoes have had their heels fixed. Been wearing my brogues for the last couple of weeks after the left heel came off in the rain. The orthotics didn't fit into the brogues so now I have my normal shoes back that should stop the occasional twinge in my tendon.
And I've booked Volvomort in for a service. The mechanic is just up the road from me and was listed on the RACV website so that gives me some confidence that they wont just fix everything and charge me a couple of thousand dollars for the privilage.
So that pretty much breaks the finances for the rest of the month :-) Current Mood: contemplative

11:26 am - Car servicing And while I think of it...
The Volvomort is well overdue for his service. Given the tendancy to fix all these inconsequential things and not tell me till later I'm not going back to the Volvo mechanic in North Coburg I went to last time.
Can anyone recommend a mechanic in the Northcote, Preston-ish area?
I know there are a few of you this side of the city. Current Mood: working

10:27 pm - Weekend round-up Well the wedding on Saturday went well even though Volvomort nearly overheated on the drive to Ballarat. And he's covered in bug-splat. I'll have to give him a good wash.
Thankfully the weather was a little cooler than in Melbourne so my mediaeval attire didn't leave me sweating like a fountain. It was really nice with the bride arriving on a paddleboat and the ceremony taking place under some huge trees in the park by the lake. It also contained some touches from our pagan past such as the hadfasting cord and jumping the broomstick. They'd even managed to get the bride's grandmother to sweep clean the future path for the bride and groom. All very good.
St. Andrew's Day today at missmargaret and thebaronmk1's place went well with a couple of kilts ( thebaronmk1 borrowed my old one) some whisky, a BBQ, rain and good conversation. Also some Billy Connolly in the background later in the evening.
And in between all of that I managed to mow the grass, unpack more boxes and do some shopping.
First official day of work tomorrow. No more training. Current Mood: relaxed

12:47 pm - Sydney touring Well Saturday night's dinner in New Town was fabulous. Some very nice food and some great new people. On to Kontrol which was not too bad a club. I didn't hear anything that inspired me to dance but the music itself was okay. I'm far more of a social animal anyway :-)
Arrived back to the unit in Darlinghurst only to realise I didn't have the house keys on me anymore!! Searched around the car with no luck. Only other option - drive back to New Town and hope that they dropped out of my pocker when I took out the car keys. Found the parking spot again - no keys! K suggested I may have taken the keys out of my pocket before I got to the car. Looked around the corner on the footpath and there they were just lying there!
Phew!
Headed back to K's parents on Sunday morning and filled Volvomort with all manner of crap valuable items K had sorted from things stored at her old home.
The drive back (with a stop at Wagga) was quite good. Didn't really feel tired at any stage which was good.
It was nice to see the kitties again and I thinked they missed us too.
Got up for work yesterday and it almost hadn't felt like I'd been away. Oh well Current Mood: blah

01:23 am - Driving in Sydney Fuck!!!
No Right Turn! No Left Turn! One way (no not that way idiot)!
Trying to navigate our way to Crow's Nest this evening proved to be rather an exercise in orienteering. K was in charge of the map and I tried to navigate Sydney drivers who think indicaters are optional and goddamnedtaxis. Briefly drove up a one-way street because it changed its "way" as I was driving along it "...all these cars are parked the wrong way..." *swerve*
I figure seeing as I'm now driving a Volvo (The Car Who Shall Not Be Named) and I'm on Victorian plates that pretty much means I can do what I like.
Anyway got to this pub to see the band. Jayne had rung earlier and been told they were on at 9. Arrived there about 8:45 and by 11:30 they still hadn't started. What a crock. At about 10:30 I had asked one of the roadies what time the band was supposed to be on. He said 11. We gave up in the end. What a waste of a night. Current Mood: annoyed

Seems that the boyfriend of one of my Sydney friend's housemates is heading off to Mexico and we've been offered the use of his place in Darlinghurst if we want. That would be good. At least we wouldn't be sleeping on a matress in the lounge :-)

03:07 pm - Volvomort

Oh dear.
Just got back from picking up Volvomort from the mechanics. I had taken him in for a service and a few bits and pieces that needed to be looked at. One of which was the heater fan. It had stopped working recently and I thought it was probably the heater switch. No such luck. The fan had burnt out and apparently it's a bitch to get to (you have to pull out the central instrument panel to get to it).
So after replacing the driver's windscreen wiper arm, fixing the bonnet release cable, giveing it a service and a tune...
$800+ !!!!
I didn't pay that much for the car! :-)
Oh well at least he's feeling better. Off to the movies tonight with my friend Charlie to see We Were Soldiers. K isn't interested at seeing this at all. She thought The Count of Monte Christo was a bit much. She might have to go off to a friend's place when I get around to having the Brotherhood of the Wolf soon. Which Cure single are you?
Back at work today. I've booked volvomort in for a service and some TLC. I think I'll need the heater fan and rear window demister fixed before I drive to Sydney. Not planning on driving too late at night but I like seeing where I'm going.
Went and saw the Count of Monte Christo tonight and quite enjoyed it. Some very swishy costumes (I loved the waistcoat Dantes was wearing under his gown) and not a bad movie on it's own. I still have some vague recollections of the Richard Chamberlain movie from many years ago but this was quite nice. Not quite so Machiavellian in his revenge as I would have thought appropriate but I think it's been redone for the modern audience's *taste*.

07:53 pm - Sydney bound Bwahahahahahaha...
End of this month K & I are driving up to Sydney. The plan is to arrive in Sydney Saturday 22nd and leave on Sunday 30th. We've got a stop-over in Wagga so I should be reasonably OK by the time we hit town on the Sat afternoon.
So anything happening while we're there?
Planning on catching up with a few of the bods while I'm there too. Sevare and Mary have already been warned.

04:50 pm - Pottering Well had a good few days and had a good weekend. Did a fair amount of tidying up around the house and did some putting away. I have a friend coming down from Sydney soon so I have to get the spare bed usable.
Took K out to Yarraville for some driving in the industrial areas. She did quite well getting up to 60kmh. Pretty good for a second lesson. I think I have to be a little more attentive to what *I* assume are obvious things (like street sign) and what I should be making sure she's looking out for. But all going well so far. There won't be any chance of K having her licence before we drive up to Sydney but maybe she'll be able to drive for some of the way at least.
Checked out some of the second-hand shops in the area over the weekend but didn't find any of our stuff. Not that I really expected to anyway. Given what was taken I have a feeling that it was a professional job and they've either already sold the stuff before it was nicked (had an order) or they have someone to fence their stuff to who is well away from the area the do *business* in. 09:25 am - Cars and driving Took K for a little drive around one of the shopping centre carparks last night. She did quite well I thought. It's a pity I don't have a manual car as I think it would be better to learn to drive in one but you work with what you have. Not hitting so many imaginary parked cars by the end :-)
Still have to work out what's happening with the Sydney trip. Now that K has her workplacement dates we should be able to see what's happening.

07:00 pm - Volvomort
Well I got some photos back from the last few parties and things and so have included here a pic of Volvomort. I'm reasonably happy with the car too.
K has been looking at moving for a while now and we brought up the subject of sharing a place (as my lease is due up at the start of March anyway) so this looks like it's become the new plan. We've started to look at various houses to see an idea of what we can get for the price. The only problem with all this is that it means I'm going to have to pack all my goddamn shit up in boxes again!!!

07:00 pm - Post Christmas update Happy New Year to all. I've been spending a fair bit of time with K over the past few weeks. On the 14th we drove up to Wagga Wagga in New South Wales and stayed at her grandparent's place for the weekend. It was a good drive up and Volvomort held up reasonably well. The weather was exceedingly hot though. Drove to Gundagai to see K's parent block of land. It's quite large and I tried out K's new camera on some different settings. I don't think I could retire here myself. Too far away from the things I am interested in.
Saw Monsters Inc. with the Multiverse group and thought it was fabulous. So far I haven't seen a Pixar film I haven't liked. Perhaps they will eventually include the chessplayer on one of the DVD/video sets that they release. I have also managed to see the first few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, including the musical episode thanks to some friends of mine. It all looks very promising.
Did the usual family thing for Xmas and then went round to K's and got very drunk. Pizza, alcohol and trassy videos. Great way to finish the day! And on Boxing Day I got to see Fellowship of the Ring! After waiting all this time I was very impressed by some of the rendering and images the film managed to capture. There were some disapointments too: I think the whole Lothlorien scene was just waisted. Bits chopped out and things like making Gimli the one who says the forest is ruled by a witch rather than Boromir. But scenes like the Balrog in Moria and the Last Alliance battles were just awesome. I have to go back and see it again.
