Windows 7
I read in the paper (yes actual dead tree edition) last night that Windows 7 was due to be released. Though it seems Microsoft has underestimated the interest in ripping to shreds reviewing the newest operating system for Windoze.

[Disclaimer. I use a PC. I've never been much of a one for religious cults so I haven't joined the born-again Mac users]

The thing I'm trying to puzzle out is the name.

I remember 3.1

After that came Windows 95. Then 98, 2000, ME (the bastard child no-one talks about), XP and now Vista.

So which of these were 4,5 and 6?

Although it's probably closer to random-marketing-wank in picking the number I'm curious

Windows 95/98/ME was of the MS-DOS line.

Windows 2000 (5.0), XP (5.1), Vista (6.0) come from the Windows NT 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, 4.x line.

Yep. If anyone wants the full list, see the tcl_platform(osVersion) fields of the Windows entries on this page. The tcl_platform(os) differs between the DOS based win32s and Windows 95 line and the Windows NT ones. XP and Vista are NT line products.

It's not hard.

Windows 3.0 and 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups - Windows 3.

Windows 95, 98, 98SE, and Windows ME - Windows 4.

(Let's ignore Windows NT, OK?)

Windows 2000 - Windows 5.

Windows XP - Windows 6.

Or

Windows NT - Windows 5.

Win2K and WinXP - Windows 6.

Yes, my heard hurts now ...

Better not. The kernel of Win2K onwards has been the NT5 kernel.

Oh, FWIW, Seven is more like Vista than Vista was. A lot of the "Mac wannabe" UI you used be able to switch away from in 'classic modes' is now the only option; those classic interface fallbacks are gone.

Microsoft clearly hasn't learned a damned thing.

God help me, I know the answer to this.

OK, the thing to remember here was that there were two completely different species of Windows.

Windows 3.1 was of the MS-DOS lineage. It includes Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME and then it died a natural death.

Windows NT however is completely different species. There was a Windows NT 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and then Windows NT 4.x, which was actually noticed.

Then there was Windows NT 5.0, which was more commonly known as Windows 2000.

They did a revision, known as Windows NT 5.1, which was sold as Windows XP

The latest version, Windows Vista which is Windows NT 6.0

Now, apparently there is a MS-Windows 7.

Windows ME and then it died a natural death.

If it hadn't died naturally, it would have been kicked to death by its angry users :)
