HD update
Well good news and bad news on the external Hard drive. The good news is that it is now being recognised by the computer and I've been able to run chkdsk and defrag on it.
The bad news is that of the folders on it that I can now access, the "Music" one isn't among them.

I'm wondering if copying the contents of the drive may make the files readable on another device.

I think I should probably try and get a proper "internal" drive and put the music files on that rather than have them on a USB external. In theory I assume the internal would be a little more reliable.

Right back to fighting the rainforest out the front.

External drives are usually just the same as an internal harddrive, only mounted in a shell, and the only reason they might be less reliable is because they're either being banged around, or not being dismounted from the O/S properly if they're unplugged. Was yours an externally-powered one, or powered from the USB (if USB powered, and if your power supply isn't up to it, this can cause problems)? And were you leaving it plugged in all the time?

Maxtor Basics 3200 300GB External Hard Drive. External PS but no off switch, so as a result it was left on 24/7.

Don't they power down when your machine's turned off.

Sounds like a software problem there. They're suppose to power down when not being used. Mine does just fine.

From the specs on this it doesn't seem to have an auto power off. But then neither does it have a fan so that hasn't been left running all the time either.

At this stage Sunday looks like it will be out. Going to try and see if the Computer Science bods at Uni might be able to help.

Oh my god..Nerd! Seriously, man! I don't get it, my boyfriend and his friends, they get togehter and talk about hard drives too! :-D

Anyway, i always refer to my reminder motto of world order, "We need nerds". We need nerds to be interested in the things we would rather not do. We, meaning me.

....It's very late at night and has been a long day.

Pffft! I've never denied my nerdness.

The main problem I have though is not so much the HD but the 250GB worth of music files that I can no longer access. I'm sure even you can appreciate the loss of one's music ;-)
