Remake au go go
While checking for some stuff for a "Clanks and Constructs" themed music broadcast I'll be doing later this month I discovered the rather disturbing news of yet another remake in the works.

Michael Crichton's seminal movie Westworld, that turned Yul Brinner into the icon of relentless destruction, may be filled with flares and big facial hair but it still stands as a great movie in its own right.

Why the hell did this need remaking?

Slated for release next year.

At least Tarantino has had the good sense to decline directing.

Remake's been on the cards since the '80s. Arnie was going to be in it at one point. I've never seen the film, the sequel or the spin-off TV show... so, eh.

Heh:

Ray said he'd love to speak with Crichton at some point. "My understanding is that he was offered the chance to do the first draft of this remake a few years ago, and his response was, 'I already remade that movie; the remake was called Jurassic Park,'" Ray said. "In many ways, he was right." —Ian Spellin

Remaking movies shouldn't be looked upon as a crime - its like a band covering a song. Its just that history tells us that its usually going to be bad. If I was making a movie I'd love to remake Westworld - or Death Race 2000.

Name some good remakes...

The Thing

With music you can redo the song in a different style. Reel Big Fish's cover of Take on Me as a scar piece is one of my favourites.

But invariably remakes are crap and purely generated by revenue signs rather than "a different take". The remake of Psycho didn't even get that.

The Bourne Identity is good remake and I'd put Scorsese's Cape Fear into the better than the original camp.

But for every time you get something like The Thing there's usually a dozen of Nicolas Cage's version of The Wicker Man.

Go on, tell me *you're* looking forward to Keanu Reeves upcoming remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

I am actually.

The reasons why remakes fail mystifies me - how hard would it have been to remake Texas Chainsaw as an awesome movie - yet it fails miserably.

I guess the first place to start is to ask what was wrong with the original film.

Well the victims are hippies - which is no longer socially relevant. Imagine a remake with terrorised Emos - awesome!
